| I never believe in Black Friday, but maybe I should now.
I was talking to my mom over the internet earlier tonight. While our conversation was going on, from the corner of my eyes I saw the light switch by my door is flashing red inside out. For a couple seconds I thought I must be dreaming. Then came the smell... My brain finally caught up and registered - fire! I yelled 'wait!' over to my mom, jumped up from my bed, and ran over to the door. Not wanting to be electrocuted, I grabbed my blanket and turned off the switch.
Luckily the fire went out. I was worried if it spread to the second floor. I waited for building fire alarm, but nothing went off. Finally got the emergency maintenance guy to come over to check it out. Yeap, it's all black inside.

A couple sparks and fuse went off when he was checking the damage. Every time when that happened, I jumped back again and hoping he doesn't electrocuted himself.
Since it'll be extensive repair, the guy can only tape everything off tonight and come back tomorrow.
Now this just confirmed the danger of old building with old wiring. Luckily I was there to see it happen. If I was in another room, maybe there'll be a bigger fire?
Anyhow, it's over.

| Apparently a few months back Bush administration yet again tried to limit women's rights. This time through Department of Health and Human Service. They want to redefine abortion as any means of preventing conception. In another word, many common contraception methods would be considered as 'abortion.' With the new definition, clinics with federal funding can deny proper consulting, treatment to those in need.

I can't believe how backwards this country is becoming under extremists' influence.

| I went to Taiwan Film Festival at Stanford tonight to watch The Most Distant Course directed by Lin Jing-Jie.
http://2008tff.blogspot.com/2008/07/most-distant-course.html http://www.wretch.cc/blog/distant2007
The story is about how three heartbroken people become connected and how each deals with their situation. I would say the movie is more artsy with hidden meanings. The director stayed for Q&A session after the showing, and he gave more insight on why he did certain scenes. Overall, I enjoyed it very much.
The inspiration of the movie is from an internet poem:
【世界上最遙遠的距離】
世界上最遙遠的距離
The longest distance in the world 不是 生與死
is not life and death 而是 我就站在你面前 你卻不知道我愛你
but when I stand in front of you, you don't know I love you
The first stanza is by 張小嫻. Later someone expanded it.
I'm glad the auditorium was packed with people. I'll definitely be on the out look for next one.

| I got to listen last 2/3 of vice presidential debate tonight. I am glad Sarah Palin didn't make the same mistakes as she did on earlier interviews. She seemed more confident this time. The boot camp worked. On the other hand, she didn't answer many questions nor provided much details on policies. Joe Biden, in contrast, provided more concrete examples and policy stands. Judging on debate preformance, I think Biden is better. Hopefully in the future I'll see more female candidates on presidential or vice-presidential debates. More women with substance .
